Michigan Fraternity Shaves Heads, Raises Over $40k for Children’s Cancer Research

The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon at the University of Michigan hosted their annual “Shaving for a Cure” event last Sunday, where fifty brothers shaved their flowing locks as a sign of solidarity to children and families affected by pediatric cancer.

unnamedAll told, the chapter raised an impressive $42,500 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private sponsor of children’s cancer research grants in the United States.

1 2According to the St. Baldrick’s website, childhood cancers of all types receive only 4% of federal funding for cancer research. The rest goes to adults. While there is no prioritizing one type of this disease over another, the reality is that pediatric research is severely under-funded.

3 4The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Michigan are proud to have hosted this event for six consecutive years, and have raised nearly $150,000 in that time. Pictures of the event, full of smiling faces and bald heads, can be found on the “SigEp at the University of Michigan” Facebook page, or by clicking here.
